Program Focus

The Computer Animation program focuses on teaching students the process of creating 3D animated films. Through the different stages of production, from modeling to rendering, students will learn how to create digital models, apply colors and textures, setup lights for their scenes, and animate their characters, all within Autodesk Maya, an industry standard 3D animation software.

Students who choose to pursue higher learning in computer animation after coming to the Film & Art Center have a greater advantage over other newly enrolled students, allowing them to focus on building their portfolio rather than spending time learning the basics. For those thinking of pursuing computer animation as a career, they can focus on building their portfolio upon the foundation obtained here.

Course List

LEVEL 1

CG 101: Introduction to CG

CG 101: Introduction to CG
Prerequisute: None

This course introduces students to the world of computer graphics. The goal of this course is to familiarize the students with using a 3D software. At the end of the course, students will be able to have the basics of creating 3D models, applying shaders and textures to them, setup lights for their scenes and render them for prints.

LEVEL 2

CG 201: Hard-Surface Modeling

CG 201: Hard-Surface Modeling
Prerequisute: CG 101 Introduction to CG

This course focuses on hard-surface modeling and texturing, building on the topics learnt in the introduction to CG class. Emphasis will be on utilizing poly counts, managing scene assets as well as setting up hotkeys and shortcuts to maximize modeling workflow. At the end of the course, students will have learned the process of creating hard-surface models that can be used in a production environment.

CG 202: Character Modeling

CG 202: Character Modeling
Prerequisute: CG 201 Hard-Surface Modeling

This course focuses on organic modeling. Emphasis will be on using few but necessary tools to create organic models, and grasp an understanding of the importance of good polyflow. Creating interesting poses and background to tell a story as important, if not more, than learning the tools to create it. By the end of the course, students will have a good understanding of organic models, and the skills and knowledge to create them.

CG 203: 3D Texture Painting

CG 203: 3D Texture Painting
Prerequisute: CG 202 Character Modeling

This course focuses on creating textures for 3D models. Using Adobe Photoshop, students learn to create texture maps for both hard-surface and organic models. The goal is to create believable textures that enhances the 3D model when rendered. By the end of the course, students will be able to create texture maps with confidence.

CG 204: Photo-Real Lighting & Rendering

CG 204: Photo-Real Lighting & Rendering
Prerequisute: CG 201 Hard-Surface Modeling

This course focuses creating photo-realistic renders. Students will focus on building shaders that replicate the feel of a real-life object, such as metal, wood, plastic, etc. They will then setup lights that mimics the way light handles in the real world. Finally, they will learn how to optimize their render settings. By the end of the course, students will have a good understanding of creating photo-real renders.

CG 205: Digital Sculpting

CG 205: Digital Sculpting
Prerequisute: CG 202 Character Modeling

This course introduces the students to sculpting a model digitally. Similar to the way a traditional sculptor creates a sculpture, students will use Zbrush to create their digital sculptures. Focus is on learning the tools and implementing them in their workflow. Importing and exporting models between 3D packages will also be explained. By the end of the class, students will have learned the process of creating detailed sculpture models.

LEVEL 3

CG 301: Introduction to 3D Animation

CG 301: Introduction to 3D Animation
Prerequisute: CG 202: Character Modeling

This course focuses on 3D animation, teaching the basics of animation within a 3D package. The goal is to have the students be able to do keyframe animation. Emphasis will be on practicing the principles of what makes an animation believable. By the end of the course, students will be able to animation with confidence, and be ready to proceed to the next class where the focus is on learning the principles that make great animation.

CG 302: Introduction to Rigging For Animation

CG 302: Introduction to Rigging For Animation
Prerequisute: CG 301: Introduction to 3D Animation

This course introduces the concept and tools to create rigs for animation. The focus is on understanding the skeletal joint system, the creation of FK and IK rigs, the implementation of stretchy rigs, and the use of deformers and blendshapes. Students will also learn how to create animation controls to help ease the process of animation. By the end of the course, they will have the foundation to create animation rigs for their models.

CG 303: Foundations of Animation

CG 303: Foundations of Animation
Prerequisute: CG 302: Introduction to Rigging For Animation

This course discusses the 12 principles of animation established by Disney. The goal is to understand and put into practice those principles into the students' animation projects. By the end of the course, students will have grasped the understanding of what constitute good animation.

LEVEL 4

CG 401: Portfolio Class

CG 401: Portfolio Class
Prerequisute: CG 302: Introduction to Rigging For Animation

This course focuses on assisting the students to prepare their portfolio in a DVD and print format. Students will compile all their work from previous courses and choose which ones to include in their portfolio. For students who have found their area of focus, they can use the time in this course to create their own project. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio that they can use for entrance to higher education.

CG 402: CGI Filmmaking

CG 402: CGI Filmmaking
Prerequisute: CG 302 Introduction to Rigging For Animation

The CGI Filmmaking is an advanced course for students who are interested in learning the process of creating a 3D film from beginning to end. The focus is on learning the different stages of CGI film-making, from pre-production to post-production. Emphasis will be on story development. The course will take up to 4 semesters (64-class sessions) to complete. It also requires students to have taken 5 CG courses or more, and are willing to commit to the program.
