Program Focus

The Film & Television program focuses on teaching the students the process of filmmaking. The goal is to allow the students the opportunity to learn the different stages of making a film, with emphasis on understanding the basics of what makes a good film work. Classes include the areas of screenwriting, story developing, video editing, lighting and filming.

LEVEL 1

MPT 101: Introduction to Photography  

MPT 101: Introduction to Photography
Prerequisute: None

 

This course introduces the students to world filmmaking. The goal is to allow the students to have the opportunity to explore the tools to create stories. Emphasis is on learning how to tell stories with pictures. Basic knowledge of filming, such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed, depth-of-field, white balance, etc. will be explored in detail. By the end of the class, students will have understood the basics of filmmaking.


LEVEL 2

MPT 201: Introduction to Video Editing  

MPT 201: Introduction to Video Editing
Prerequisute: MPT 101: Introduction to Photography

 

This course introduces the students to the process of non-linear editing. The goal is to help the students familiarize with the editing tools and the ability to use them efficiently. Emphasis will be on understanding how stories work, when to place edits and understanding the purpose behind the edits. Basic audio mixing and titling will also be introduced. By the end of the course, students will have grasped the knowledge and skills of editing a film that works.


MPT 202: Foundations of Film Language  

MPT 202: Foundations of Film Language
Prerequisute: MPT 201: Introduction to Video Editing

 

This course expands upon the 'Introduction to Photography' course by learning how to create shots that work. Focus will be on learning where to place the camera, how to establish continuity between shots, when to follow the 180 degree line and when to break the rule, etc. By the end of the course, students will have a good foundation on the basics of cinematography, and the skills to apply them in their films.


MPT 203: Introduction to Screenwriting  

MPT 203: Introduction to Screenwriting
Prerequisute: Introduction to Video Editing

 

This course introduces the students to screenwriting. The goal is to learn the terminology and format of writing a script. Emphasis will be on developing a story from an idea into a script. Students will also learn the process of brainstorming ideas and story development, and the importance of creating character arcs. By the end of the course, students will be able to develop a script.


LEVEL 3

MPT 301: Film Editing  

MPT 301: Film Editing
Prerequisute: MPT 201: Introduction to Video Editing

 

This course expands upon the 'Introduction to Video Editing' course by using Avid Media Composer, the industry-standard editing software for feature film editing. Students learn how to navigate around the software interface, how to import and log footage, and how to export their edits into various formats. By the end of the course, students will have familiarized themselves with using Avid Media Composer.


MPT 302: Film Lighting  

MPT 302: Film Lighting
Prerequisute: Foundations of Film Language

 

This course introduces the students to lighting for a film set. The goal is to understand the uses of different lights to achieve the desired look of the film, and put them in practice.


MPT 303: Story Development for Film  

MPT 303: Story Development for Film
Prerequisute: MPT 203: Introduction to Screenwriting

 

This course expands on the 'Introduction to Screenwriting' course by focusing on story development. Students learn in-depth on how to develop an idea into a feature film script. Various films will be discussed and dissected, allowing thorough understanding of the story structures. By the end of the course, students will have a finished script in a feature film screenplay format.


LEVEL 4

MPT 401: Film Project  

MPT 401: Film Project
Prerequisute: MPT 302: Film Lighting

 

This is an advanced course for students interested in making a short film. Emphasis will be on learning the pre-production, production and post-production stages of filmmaking. Students will be required to work together outside of class and complete the project on time. After the film is completed, students are encouraged to submit them to film festivals.
